Note on Cox: John Cox, later Cox and Son, was an English gunmaker who began trading from 13 High Street, Southampton, Hampshire, in 1843. After a move to 7 Bernard St. in 1854, John Cox died in the early 1860's; business was carried on for a few years by his widow Mary-Ann, then by his son (also named John). Cox & Son was still trading from 28 High Street at the turn of the century.
