The squared grips are out of black bakelite and carry a lanyard ring on the butt.
This flare gun was a 2. W. W. issue, and was intended to true light over the fighting Zone. It could make daylight in a km2.
In the airplanes, they used a model that could shoot out of the hull thru a special bracket.
