ALLEN & THURBER

CASED STANDARD SIZE DE-LUXE PEPPERBOX - NORWICH

A beautiful cased Allen & Thurber pepperbox from the Norwich production location era.

This is a standard model 6-shot pepperbox embellished with rarely seen engraved silver grips.

The barrel has the flat ribs and the grip is of the semi-dogleg type, both characteristics of Norwich production.

Although the patent date on the barrel mentioned 1837, the internal works are already of the 1845 patented mechanism which can be seen by the position of the main spring tension screw.

Ethan Allen used a network of retail agents to sell his pistols and pepperboxes.

The name of the retail agent was in many cases marked on the hammer as with this pepperbox.  J.G.BOLEN of New York was one of the main retail agents for Allen in business from the early 1840’s to 1858

Hammer marking: J.G.BOLEN N.Y.    /    ALLEN’S PATENT

Barrel marking: PATENTED 1837 CASTSTEEL

This cased example has the original label on the inside of the case lid.  Note the text: Life and property preservers, for housekeepers, travelers, captains, and others.
