Colt 1911

Colt 1911
Colt 1911 pistol, manufactured by Colt, year of
manufacture 1918.
This example has the characteristic finish of the period
due to the desire to speed up production.
The polishing was much less advanced making the surface
rougher which results in the tanning appearing almost black, reminiscent to some
extent of parkerization.
The controls of the finish were also less important, on
some examples the tanning was finer and therefore not as durable as on examples
produced before 1918.
American collectors also refer to the finish as "black
army" or "black finish" (see Collector's Guide to Colt .45 Service Pistols
Models of 1911 and 1911A1, by Charles W. Clawson, pg 11 and 74).
