Carteron & Suan(t)
It is a rifle that can be dated, by its style and the hook assembly, to the very
beginning of the 19th century.
The locks, formerly flintlock, seem older to me and to have been reassembled by
Jean Suan(t) in Puy de Dôme, a little-known gunsmith from whom I held a late
18th century flintlock pistol, signed in Croupière (probably for Courpière, a
village not far from Issoire)
Carteron: probably Joseph, born in 1747 from a large family of gunners from St
Etienne - J. Baptiste C. signed barrels of pistols of Garde du Corps 1743.
The elders were less picky than we are about the spelling of proper names...
