Lefaucheux - Civil war
A French firm manufactures the necessary to reload this type of ammunition.

Here as I had promised it to you at the time of a preceding e-mail the restored LF27405.
As you can see it on the photo “LF 27405 - BEFORE” the hammer had been crossed, the rod replaced by one resembling the original one, springs checked and/or changed and the frame correctly welded.
I still do not have an explanation right and convincing concerning letter “SD” marked on the thunder with right side.
Mr Lautissier that I met at the beginning of week is of the same opinion that Marcel, i.e. that probably the letters were affixed by the arms manufacturer who with modified the gun and the back sight.
Today it is probably a weapon in operating state
Yours sincerely
Guillaume
Interesting weapon at more than one point because carrying a n° of series located between 25067 and 36900, which indicates without any doubt that it belonged to the 11.833 revolvers model 1854 sold between 1861 and 1862 with the Northern army for the American Civil War. The shortening of the gun and the modifications of the hammer were thus made in the USA, undoubtedly by a local arms manufacturer in a small city, and it is a pity almost which it was restored, because it is a truth memory of this bloody war.

LEFAUCHEUX MODEL 1854 REVOLVER - AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
This revolver is a regular 1854 model, also called "Cavalry Model", 12 mm pinfire calibre, single action, serial # 34059.
Nice brown oxidation patina, lock mechanism in perfect working condition. The loading gate is a replacement.
The serial# is stamped on the right side of the frame, under the cylinder, and without the "broken pistol" logo that is found on several Lefaucheux arms.
On the left side of the frame, under the cylinder, is the mention "Eugene Lefaucheux Breveté S.G.D.G" in two lines in an oval shape.
Serial # 34059, being between 25067 and 36900, proves that this gun was part of the lot of 11,833 revolvers purchased by Colonel Schuyler in October, 1861 on behalf of the Union Army. Schuyler had been in Paris and had ordered directly from Eugène Lefaucheux 10,000 revolvers and 200,000 cartridges. The 1833 remaining revolvers were delivered by other suppliers; among others 1500 by Alexis Godillot, gunmaker at Paris and Liège; 92 other, the 52 more were purchased through other American suppliers; and the US ambassador in Belgium, Henry Stanford, purchased 25 in Liège. Whe delivered the last ones is not known, but it has been established that the Union Army purchased - and used - 11,833 Lefaucheux 1854 revolvers between October, 1861 and June, 1862.
This revolver is one of them, and came directly from the USA among other Civil War weapons.
